9 Ways to Have a More Productive Desk + Desk Tour (2018)

Getting work done can be a daunting task. For most of us (myself included), it often requires that we go somewhere else to finish our daily assignments. Whether it’s a coffee shop, the local library, or a friend’s house, we often times have to get out of the house to be productive… but that can be costly. Hell, I should own stock with Starbucks by now. Either way, doing work at home can be incredibly rewarding, you just have to be dedicated to productivity. So, how does one get sh*t done at home? Keep reading for my personal productivity hacks for your home desk, as well as, see a quick tour of my desk space!


1. Keep it clutter free.

Okay, so maybe my desk isn’t the best example of things. I just like having things around me — but I still leave plenty of room to spread out my things and do work. The purpose of a desk is having a large, flat space to complete your assignments, so make sure you don’t have clutter getting in the way of that.

2. Designate a space to work.

This might seem like an obvious tip, but so many people actually neglect to designate a space to get work done. Your dining room table just isn’t enough. Even if it’s a small corner of your bedroom or kitchen, having an actual area that has the sole purpose of being used as workspace is incredibly important. You want your workspace to be associated, primarily, with work, so you’re always in a working mindset when you go to it.

3. Get dressed.

Okay, let me explain. Oftentimes, I try to start my work while in my pajamas… and it never works. When I get up in the morning, I have to run through a morning routine: washing my face, brushing my teeth, and having some coffee. Then I get dressed — in yoga pants, leggings, whatever — so long as I don’t stay in my pajamas. Neglecting to put forth the effort to get dressed is not going to create a productive mindset, something that’s obviously required for a productive work session.

4. Have your desk in a well-lit room, preferably with natural lighting.

I don’t know about you all, but the darker the room is, the more likely I am to fall asleep in it. In order to be productive, I usually require a light, clean space that has plenty of natural lighting flowing into it. It often helps for me to work near a window or even with the window open. Not only does a lot of lighting help me see things clearer, but it puts me in an overall better mood, pushing me to be more productive.

5. Hang up inspirational/motivational décor.

This may sound cheesy, but having positivity surrounding you can actually push you to be a more positive person. Display pictures of family and friends, an inspiration board, motivational quotes, or encouraging notes from the people in your life. Keep it all within eye’s reach, so you can always glance at it when you’re in the need for some motivation.

6. Keep a clock on your desk.

For most of us, being productive oftentimes means putting away our phones. I’ve found that keeping an analog clock on my desk is essential in allowing me to keep up with the time without being distracted by my phone (because, admit it, when you go to innocently check the time on your phone, you get sucked into Instagram for roughly ten minutes). I love this clock which also doubles as an alarm clock. It’s cute, vintage, and doesn’t allow me to hit snooze in the mornings.

7. Make your desk an appealing space.

Similarly to my fifth point, you want your desk to be a space that you’re not only comfortable in, but that you want to go to. If your desk space is a dreary, bland area that is, ultimately, unappealing to you, what are the chances that you’ll actually work at it? For me, the chances are slim. Eliminate those possibilities by decorating your desk to reflect your personality! My personal favorite place to pick up desk décor is the Target dollar spot.

8. Keep a pen & paper within reach.

In the day and age where technology is abundant, you may think this is absurd… but I promise this is essential! I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve been on the phone or watching a video and needed to jot down a note really quickly, but didn’t have the resources to do so (i.e. I was already on my phone or my computer/phone was on the other side of the room). Having a note pad and a pen nearby will save your butt more times than you can count, I promise!

9. Clean/organize your desk regularly.

This can seem like a daunting task, but if you keep up with it on a regular basis (weekly or biweekly – honestly it just depends on how often you use your desk space!), it will help you out so much. Living the busy lifestyle that I know you do, unnecessary things can accumulate on your desk. Just last week, I had an empty box of  Thin Mints, a bag of lipsticks I never use anymore, old assignments that had been graded, and mail. By simply picking up and putting away (or throwing away) those things, your desk becomes a much more accommodating space. I also like to wipe down my desk on a weekly basis with these wipes to ensure that any germs or crumbs don’t linger around too long.

My desk has three levels to it, so it holds a lot of stuff! This is probably the biggest desk I’ve ever owned and I’m super grateful for that.

As I mentioned, I find it very useful to surround myself with happy things — especially pictures of people that I love. I also keep my two favorite books, milk and honey and the sun and her flowers by Rupi Kaur within close reach if I need a motivational or inspirational passage to keep me going.

Pinned in front of me are my bulletin boards full of inspirational things that keep me going on the day-to-day. I have pictures of family, inspirational quotes and notes, and even the first “A” I got in college (on a Spanish presentation, nonetheless!) that are all pinned up to remind me of how capable I am, and how I should strive to do as much as I can in life.

The second tier of my desk holds my record collection, my Disney Pin collection (click here for a very old and outdated look at my collection), a vintage camera of my grandfather’s, and a birthday banner a friend made for me a few years ago.

The very top of my desk has some of my less-accessed materials. I have a small book collection (materials for classes, previous classes, and my own personal collection), a wireless speaker, candle, tissues, and a wine with my name (note: there’s no wine in the bottle… whoops).
